abstract art paintings

Usually abstract art is concerned with dramatic visual effects in a work of art, rather than showing something as it looks in nature.

Sometimes works are somewhat abstract, where they look at something and change it so you barely can tell what it was originally. Sometimes it is totally abstract: just lines and color arranged on paper or canvas in eye-catching, impressive patterns. That's abstract expressionism, popular in the 1950s, Pollock is probably best example. Expressionism (like in early 1900's Germany) is trying to show unusual mental states, such as madness or mystical union with nature.
